Steven 'dfb' Leunens: Where is the love for the game nowadays?

2010-05-21 10:05:12 / E-sport / Av: Robin Skoglund

Due to being sick today and yesterday I actually took the time to read through a couple of links and articles that have been passed on to me the past few days. One of them really caught my attention; Steven's article about the love for games, in particular the following segment:

"Going back to when I started gaming I loved the game so much that as a 17-year old I travelled to the Netherlands to participate in my first official LAN event. I spent over £300 attending i17 (yes, I go back THAT far), actually winning the event and getting a cool £50 back from the prize money. Ironically I ended up spending twice as much due to a missed flight but I didn’t care. I wasn’t there for the money. I was there for the friendship. I was there for the love of the game and all the doors it had opened for me. This is a feeling I’m missing more and more with the new wave of players coming into the scene. Far too often I see players and teams demanding unrealistic things from their organizations. Unproven teams wanting international travel paid and expect everything right now, not tomorrow."

The worst thing about what Steven says, is that it is true. In contrast to many other (pretty much every other) MGO we chose to take in players of all different levels. Why? Because just as Steven says, it's a love for the game: not the fame nor the money. Of course everyone of you must realise that we do not financially support all of our teams, all players demand different kinds of attention. Some of our players seek help in building a team that works dynamically, others are already good enough gaming- and team-wise to hit the international offline events; those players and teams are the ones looking for financial support.

The number one thing Druidz embrace in gaming is the love for the gaming itself. If a team or player does not have that then they simply do not fit here, that is partly why we at some times have a large consumption of both players and teams. Some people seem to live in the juvenile belief that just because you made it into an MGO you will all of a sudden get everything paid for (travel, accomondation and entry fee's) and sometimes even a monthly salary; without ever having proven anything to us.

I believe that the world of E-Sport need more people like Steven, people who see gaming for what it is. If it is just a hobby to you and you are not willing to invest neither time nor money in it, why are you asking an organisation to do it for you? Since when did money grow on trees?

Finally I strongly recommend you to read his entire article over at TEK9 (Link).
