Super Street Fighter IV Preview and pre-talk with Team Druidz SFIV players

Just around the corner is the new Super Street Fighter IV that’s getting ready to be released and make it’s grand entrance on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, with new special moves, stages, characters and modes Capcom promises a more well balanced and polished game.
We at CtrlAltelite thought that it would be more than fitting to sit down and have a chat with two of Sweden’s best Street Fighter IV players: Niklas Lagerborg (Skatan_Milla) and Leo Sundholm (Yagami) about their thoughts, expectations and personal views about the new Super Street Fighter IV that’s due for release in April (we can always hope for a sooner date, but don’t get your hopes up) as no exact date is set., will be for fighting fans all over the world.
Ctrl: Yagami you play a lot as Dhalsim, do you think you will change character with so many new ones announced in Super Street Fighter IV?
Yagami: If I am going to change my main character completely is to early to say, but there are new characters that definitely interests me. I am going to try out both Cody and Guy a lot, and if I like one of them enough there might be a change Besides there are at least three characters that haven’t been announced yet.
Ctrl: Skatan do you have any Fighter that you are looking forward to play as in SSFIV?
Skatan: I’m actually looking forward to a few of the new ones, Yuri, Cody and Deejay seems interesting.
Then there’s Adon who seems to have some fun moves to play around with, even though I really hate his character design.
Other then that it’s going to be interesting to try out the ones that already where in Street Fighter IV from the start, seeing that they will be totally rebalanced.
Sakura e.g. that I have been playing as my secondary for a very long time, but she has never been more then that because my personal opinion is that she hasn’t been good enough.
Now in Super Street Fighter IV there might even be more characters that I’ve tried out, but put on the shelf due to the fact that they haven’t been sufficient.
Ctrl: What do you think about the new characters in general? Any old time favorites such as: Adon, Guy, DeeJay, Cody and T-Hawk?
Yagami: As I mention earlier I do have some interest in Guy and Cody. Especially Cody seems pretty different in SSFIV, and Guy has always been cool and have had an interesting play style. I used to play as Guy in Street Fighter Alpha 3, but it was never a game I that took to the next level, besides Guy was really a hard to master character in the Alpha 3 game. I’ll probably try out Deejay, at least give him a chance, I used to play as him and Blanka in Super Street Fighter II as he seems pretty fun and has potential in SSFIV.
I’ve never liked Adon at all in Alpha 3, neither gameplay wise or visually and I am pretty sure I’ll feel the same way for him in SSFIV
T-Hawk feels like he’s always been kind of a comical character. I don’t think I’ll will waste much time on him.
Yuri, the only completely new character so far also seems very interesting. I’ll probably won’t play as her as she seems like that kind of character that takes a lot of effort and energy to master so I’m not sure about her yet, but she seems like an interesting addition to the game.
With that said I think I’ll will stick with Cody and foremost Guy are my tipped favorites from the new/old rooster. This can however change when we get to see witch Street Fighter III characters they bring into the game.
Skatan: When I played ST a lot I often thought DeeJay was really fun to play as, his normal’s are really good and he is good at pressing people in to corners.
He also has a good pressure feel to him, and if he get’s a knockdown on the opponent his “j.mk” works really well as cross up.
DeeJay has to my knowledge never had any special weakness, so I’m hoping they keep his versatility in SSFIV.
I don’t have that much interest in the characters that came with the Alpha series now or before. Cody e.g. is really horrible if you look at his design in the alpha series, but in SSFIV they have manage to make him look really good.
Ctrl: What new modes in the game are you hoping to see? Where there any modes you thought was missing from SFIV?
Skatan: As you more or less only play 1 vs 1 versus there isn’t very much that I missed in SFIV.
Then again a better training mode would be welcomed, it works as it is now but a better one wouldn’t hurt.
More options for record would come in handy as well.
Other then that if you look on the online aspect of the game it seems that Capcom are putting effort into giving players what they missed or complained about in.
More players in the same lobby, the option to save replays (off and online), team-battles etc, not much to complain about there.
Although it would be nice if they keep building on the Combo-Challenge more in SSFIV, I thought it was a very popular feature last time around
Yagami: I don’t think any new modes are needed. Capcom is going to ass more online modes, but as I rarely play online i don’t care so much for it.
Ctrl: What difficulty setting do you guys play on when playing Single player?
Yagami: The hardest setting, but I mostly play training mode when I play alone. And if you play arcade mode to much you can develop bad habits that makes you loose to a human opponent.
Skatan: I never play single player as it’s a loos.
What is fun for me with fighting games is the readout you have to do against the other human opponent, when you play against the cpu that isn’t present. I to also play training mode a lot to.
Ctrl: What special moves where the hardest to pull of and learn for you among the different characters?
Yagami: Seeing as I play a lot as Dhalshim, and he is not the kind of character that has many hard execution moves to pull off. The hardest on with him might be to do the Air Teleport (IAT) instead of the usual Instant Air Teleport (IAT) But when I have played a verity of other characters execution has never been a problem for me in SFIV.
Skatan: c.hp x hk legs with Chun-Li, it took me quite a while before I learnt to be consistent in nailing it.
Pure input wise all of the special moves are easy to do, the tough thing is to apply them the right way into a combo and your neutral play in the game.
Otherwise we have C.Viper who I found is really complicated regarding execution on when playing on a high level.
Ctrl: What combos/Special moves do you use the most of when playing?
Skatan: Anything that hits...
If fireballs hit, I’ll throw fireballs.
If my overhead Hazanshu hits I’ll use it.
If throw works, I’ll throw.
Yagami: As I mention earlier Dhalsim is one of those character that doesn’t have that many combos. Almost the only one he has that’s used frequently is: Jumping back heavy punch, back medium kick, light punch yoga flame, yoga inferno
Ctrl: What character do you find the most difficult to play against (cpu or human opponent)
Yagami: if it comes down to a human opponent I’d have to say Rufus and C.Viper, those are the two opponents I have the hardest time against, foremost because they are Dhalsim’s worst match ups. And secondly those two can easily get in close on Dhalsim, and once there it becomes a pure guessing game how to break free from the situation. Besides there is no one in Stockholm that plays those characters on a high level, so I rarely to never get the chance to train against that match up.
The Cpu is never hard to beat, it doesn’t matter witch character you choose to play as. There’s always way to trick it.
Skatan: Akuma because it is Chuns absolute worst match up. Partly it’s a pain as her combos doesn’t work on him .And also the fact that her Ultra is kind of useless.
And finally it’s a pain in the ass because Akuma earns big favors on both running away with air had and when he get’s Chun into a corner.
Ctrl: Best respective worst match you have had and who where you playing against then?
Skatan: My best match/matches I’ve had was in SFIV against Zak in casuals when I went to SvB'09 in England.
he played as Balrog in a way I hade never seen before then..
I personally feel that I have pretty good “footsies”, footsies is when you are fairly close to your opponent and trying to land hits with your normals.
When I played against Zak I got to feel how it was to play against someone who had better “footsies” then me, it was really fun.
It made me think in a way I never had to.
Yagami: Well I’ll have to say Dreamhack Winter 2009, where I went up against Zak Bennet from England during the tournament. He is one England’s absolute best players and I was sure I was going to loose against him, but somehow I managed to bring home the victory. A classmate was there and filmed the match with his cell phone, unfortunately he have had some troubles with Youtube I am really looking forward to seeing it. Worst match is a bit harder to answer. Possibly the time I played online and experienced a lot of lag and at the same time one of my buttons on my arcade stick started to break, so i did a lot of misses that I felt wasn’t my fault at all.
Ctrl: Favorite Street Fighter game over the ones that you have played, counting to this day?
Yagami: Street Fighter III: Third Strike (3s). 3s was the first Street Fighter game that I started to get serious with and the one I have had the most fun with. The game has a nice flow to it and a lot of interesting mind games.
Skatan: With Street Fighter the most fun I’ve had so far is with SFIV.
But if you count all the fighting games Capcom has made, my all time favorite is Vampire Savoir (Darkstalkers 3).
Ctrl: And finally do you guys have any pointers, tips for someone who wants to get into the street fighter scene and get better to reach the pro level of gameplay?
Skatan: Find people to play against, make sure you learn how the game actually works with the depths and combos. Always try to think about why you win/loose instead of just playing “mindlessly”.
try to find more then one solution for every problem, sure the shoryuken may work but it’s punishable on block..
Maybe it also works to back dash, or jump, maybe even a throw.
The more answers you get find out to the problem, the harder you make it for your opponent to control you and your strategies to get him to do as he wants.
There’s also very good information sites like: shoryuken.com and bitterharmony.com where you can find players and also read up on strategies.
I also recommend watching matches on Youtube as it can be very educational, there is a lot to learn from the best players in the world on how to play and master the skills with your favorite main character of choice.
There is also a lot of active playing going on both at Dragon's Lair in Stockholm as well as in Gothenburg
Yagami: Play as much as you can, and read into how you play the game the “right” way.
e.g. at bitterharmony.com you can get a hold of all the players in the Swedish scene , meet new people to play against and learn more about the game itself. For more game related tips check out the site Niklas recommended shoryuken.coms forum the site really is a big information source. To watch videos and study the pro’s is also a great way to learn a great deal from.
And if you live in the Stockholm area, make your way to Dragon's Lair where you can find many players battling it out.
